July 22, 2022 10-3 at the Vermont State Archives & Records Administration 1078 Rt. 2, Middlesex (behind the state police barracks)

This workshop on emergency response and salvage techniques is specifically tailored for staff and volunteers at historic records-holding repositories and institutions with other historic paper-based collections.

The first half of the workshop will consist of an informal PowerPoint presentation, with attendee participation and questions strongly encouraged throughout the presentation. Topics will address the specific needs of historic paper-based collections and will include the following:

  • Overview of the Four Emergency Stages

  • Brief introduction to creating emergency plans using templates

  • Emergency response procedures for paper-based collections

  • Identification of the vulnerabilities specific to paper-based collections

  • Recommended emergency supplies and equipment for paper-based collections

  • State, local and federal emergency resources and potential emergency response vendors

The second half of the workshop will be a hands-on wet salvage exercise. This will consist of demonstrations, followed by a hands-on practical exercise with participants divided into “response teams.”  Each team will practice responding to and salvaging a small collection of historical paper objects that have been in a water-related emergency.

Participants will receive a written copy of the information presented, including recommended response procedures for paper-based collections and resource, supply, and vendor lists.

Participation is limited to 20 people per session and registration is required.  To RSVP, please email rachel.onuf@vermont.gov or call Rachel at 802-622-4092.  Be sure to note which discussion you plan on attending.  Please bring a bag lunch.

We will be following Vermont Department of Health guidelines for COVID-19 as it relates to masking, vaccinations, & social distancing and will communicate those guidelines with registered participants the week before.

These sessions are funded by the National Historical Publications & Records Commission.
