Environmental monitoring standards? What standards?
What are the last instructions you remember about temperature and relative humidity requirements for heritage objects and which standards do you apply? How many "standards" have you known during your career? We will briefly summarize the evolution of environmental monitoring standards and how they may affect environmental control practices today and in the near future. Whether you work in institutions or private practice, "standards" are changing for everyone again.
We will talk about the rise and fall of the 50/70 rule and the shift towards an active risk management approach. Contemporary challenges include financial constraints and the climate crisis, so we will discuss their significance and the impact of global events and social movements on environmental standards. What does it take to apply a holistic, context-specific approach to collection care? Are we prepared to adapt to evolving methodologies and embrace less prescriptive standards for effective preservation in diverse contexts?
