Ask a Conservator Q&A Session

Friday, November 1, is Ask a Conservator Day, organized by the American Institute for Conservation.  Ask a Conservator Day follows in the spirit of the international collaboration and exchange of knowledge that grew out of the historic flooding of Florence, Italy, on November 4th, 1966. Events will be held worldwide on this day, in person, virtually, and across social media to allow conservators to share their work and roles in cultural heritage preservation with the public.

Join our panel of professional conservators for this free and informal question-and-answer session hosted by CCCA to help celebrate AIC's Ask A Conservator Day.

Do you have questions about what conservators do? Specific questions about items in your collection? Would you like to know more about how to become a conservator? Wondering what types of lighting and other environmental conditions are safest and what should be avoided?

A group of CCCA conservator members will be available to answer your questions and share helpful tips about textiles, objects, photographs, sculpture, paper, painted surfaces, historic buildings, and more.

If you would like to submit a question ahead of time, you can enter it at the end of this form. You are also welcome to ask questions live during the event!

Pre-registration is required and a Zoom link for the meeting will be sent to you closer to the meeting date. Space in the workshop is limited to 100 participants. Please register by Monday October 28th. Please note, this webinar will not be recorded.

The cost of this virtual Q&A session  is FREE!

CCCA & Conserv Environmental Standards Webinar 10/31/2024

Environmental monitoring standards? What standards?

What are the last instructions you remember about temperature and relative humidity requirements for heritage objects and which standards do you apply? How many "standards" have you known during your career? We will briefly summarize the evolution of environmental monitoring standards and how they may affect environmental control practices today and in the near future. Whether you work in institutions or private practice, "standards" are changing for everyone again.

We will talk about the rise and fall of the 50/70 rule and the shift towards an active risk management approach. Contemporary challenges include financial constraints and the climate crisis, so we will discuss their significance and the impact of global events and social movements on environmental standards. What does it take to apply a holistic, context-specific approach to collection care? Are we prepared to adapt to evolving methodologies and embrace less prescriptive standards for effective preservation in diverse contexts?

Join Angelica Isa Adaniya, Customer Success Manager at Conserv, for this free informational webinar and open discussion on the evolving story of environmental monitoring standards and expectations.

Presented by

Want to know how to handle your framed piece of art properly?  Do you wish you knew more about the correct types of boxes and storage supplies that should be used to pack your cherished textile?  Have questions about stains on a watercolor or print or wonder why the mat has yellowed?  Want to know how to find a qualified specialist?

One of our conservators will discuss condition issues, make some basic recommendations for handling, housing, and/or treatment, or advise where to find answers to particular questions. Another CCCA member will be available to talk about best practices for displaying something within one’s home, how best to inventory and photograph the item for   insurance, gifting or estate planning purposes or to just advise on how to find a new home for the item.

Bring your antique samplers and other schoolgirl embroideries to the premiere Sampler ID Day event where they will be registered in the Vermont Statewide Sampler database, documented, and professionally photographed. You will have the chance to meet with sampler experts and learn more about your needlework treasures.

This event is free to all participants. Friday is by appointment only; Saturday is walk-in or by appointment. To make an appointment, email samplersvt@gmail.com. CCCA Professional Affiliate Michele Pagan is co-lead for this initiative.

Please bring along any information you may have about your sampler or the sampler maker.

About the Vermont Statewide Sampler Initiative

Vermont has a rich history of providing diverse educational options for its girls and young women. Relatively little is known, however, about the schoolgirl samplers and needlework pictures produced by students in Vermont’s early schools, public and private.

The Vermont Statewide Sampler Initiative in collaboration with the Sampler Archive Project is working to change that! A national survey conducted in collaboration with the Sampler Consortium uncovered more than 300 Vermont samplers in collections across the nation, representing all 14 Vermont counties.

In addition, a Vermont-based team is working with the state’s museums, historical societies, historic homes, and private collectors. The goal is to photograph and document all American samplers in their collections for inclusion in the Sampler Archive, an online searchable database of American schoolgirl needlework. Although the focus of this statewide initiative is on Vermont samplers, all American samplers residing in Vermont collections will be documented. Ultimately, members of the Vermont Statewide Sampler Initiative hope to host an exhibition and publish a book on Vermont samplers and related girlhood embroideries.

Description: What if you didn’t have to do it all alone? How can we look at creative ideas for partnerships among organizations and individuals beyond shared programs: Shared spaces? Shared purchasing? History pen pals??? Members of the Collections Care & Conservation Alliance will share some ideas and options for how we can work together to share the load, with time to see if we can make any “matches” in the room.

2021 VT LLHSM ANNUAL CONFERENCE

2021 LLHSM ANNUAL CONFERENCE

67th Annual Meeting of the League of Local Historical Societies & Museums
October 30, 2021
Montpelier, VT

Vermont’s story is shared, celebrated, and preserved by the over 190 local historical societies and museums found in all corners of the state. Working to foster a sense of community that bridges generations, they provide a sense of place and help define Vermont’s unique identity. At the League of Local Historical Societies & Museums (LLHSM) 67th annual meeting, we’ll come together to learn and share about the different ways we can accomplish these important objectives, especially in times of uncertainty and change.

The Vermont History Museum in Montpelier is our home base for the conference, with an opportunity to view the exhibit “Lively & Local: Historical Societies in Vermont", exploring the work of local historical societies & museums through images and stories curated by a select group of participants from around the state.

This year’s conference includes two sessions presented by CCCA Board Members:

How Objects Communicate: Reading the History in Your Collections
Michele Pagan, Textile Conservator

Objects can tell many stories beyond just who owned or used them. In this session, we’ll explore other ways objects can speak to us about their history- from their construction, to the materials they are made of, to their color. We’ll explore uses for this type of object examination, such as integrating it into education programs, debunking “myths”, and conducting original research. If you’ve ever wanted to look at your objects in a new way, this session is for you.

Collections Care,  MacGyver-Style
Collections Care & Conservation Alliance (CCCA)

Join professional members of the Collections Care & Conservation Alliance for a show-and-tell session on using inexpensive, everyday household items like photocopy paper, wine corks, scrap 2x4s, quilt batting, and foam pipe insulation for collections storage and display. Learn where you can safely deploy these sneaky alternatives to the official products sold by museum and archival suppliers and make your limited budget stretch further.

CCCA Virtual Workshop - Know it All: Inventory 101

CCCA Virtual Workshop - Know it All: Inventory 101

A collections inventory can be a daunting prospect. But just about any organization, large or small would benefit from going through an inventory process.  The more you know about what you have, the better you can provide access to your collections, conduct research, develop programs & exhibits, and determine preservation needs. It is also important for insurance purposes or if your collection is impacted by a disaster.

The presenters will discuss different frameworks for approaching an inventory project, including the Active Collections approach and the archival approach; what goes into planning for an inventory project; and different strategies for getting the inventory started – and finished.  We will try to persuade you that an inventory project serves as a springboard to greater things:  it can rejuvenate your interest in what you’ve got and suggest new stories that could be shared with your community.

This webinar is intended for staff and volunteers at institutions large and small with artifacts, books, archives – you name it!   There will be some time for questions directly after the presentation.

Pre-registration is required and a Zoom link for the meeting will be sent to you closer to the meeting date. Space in the workshop is limited to 100 participants. Please register by September 15th.

If you can’t make it to the live event, you can still register for the workshop and we will send you the recording once it becomes available.

Presented by CCCA Directors Eileen Corcoran and Rachel Onuf

The cost of the virtual workshop is as follows:

Talk on Historic Painted Theater Curtains by Chris Hadsel

Talk on Historic Painted Theater Curtains by Chris Hadsel

  • Milton, VT Historical Society (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Chris Hadsel, Director of Curtains Without Borders and CCCA Member, will be speaking about the history and conservation of painted theater curtains in New England. Between 1880 and World War II, painted theater curtains were artistic features of most New England villages and towns. In Vermont, painted curtains graced stages in town and grange halls, opera houses, and community theaters. A culture of local variety shows and traveling, professional talent flourished in front of those curtains in some very remote Vermont communities.

In a tour of some of the 177 curtains in Vermont, Christine Hadsel, director of Curtains Without Borders, provides a glimpse into the world of talented and often sophisticated artists who were part of the rural cultural scene, illustrating the rich cultural history of small-town Vermont before World War I.

Free admission, donations appreciated, open to the public. This event is made possible by the Vermont Humanities Council through its Speakers Bureau Program.
